Block #2

You'll need four different colors from your "blocks" fabric for this block, so select four and designate them #1, #2, #3, and #4.

You'll need:
Eight 5" squares of background fabric
Two 5" squares of fabric #1 (Blue)
Two 5" squares of fabric #2 (Green)
Two 5" squares of fabric #3 (Grey)
Two 5" squares of fabric #4 (Zigzag)

Using the directions from this blog post, use the above fabrics to make 16 half square triangles. Arrange them as seen in this picture.

Sew them together into four rows

And sew the rows together, matching up corners, to get the finished block

Two down, seven to go.

Half Square Triangle Construction

Preface: We're going to be using 5" squares to construct the blocks, so from the background/sashing fabric, you're gong to be cutting 72 5" squares, and 72 5" squares from the blocks fabrics. You don't have to cut them all at once, just be aware that that's the plan.

Instructions:

Mark diagonal lines on back of 5” Background squares.

Lay marked square Right Sides Together on colored 5” square.

Stitch ¼” on both sides of marked line.

Cut apart on line.

Press to dark.

Trim each to 4” square.

Ta-Da! Now you have two half square triangles.

If that wasn't 100% understandable, here is a 30 second video showing you how to do it.

Overview of Block of the Month Quilt

This blog is dedicated to the half square triangle block of the month sampler quilt project we will be doing for the Seven Hills Relief Society in Aurora Colorado. Every month from March to November, a new block will be presented, each using the same half square triangle technique. The month of December will be dedicated to the assembly of the quilt.

This project will be easy to do, so if you have no experience, no problem. This will be a great learning experience. If you are already a pro, that's great too. We'd love your participation! If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments or contact Laura or Alice personally. Alrighty then. Let's get started!
